The Rock Development Group’s redevelopment at the Belconnen Markets will create a vibrant new precinct, right in the heart of Belconnen.

Using previously vacant land behind the existing markets on Belconnen Way and Benjamin Way, five new buildings will be created with office, retail and residential spaces. New cafes, restaurants, retail outlets, parkland, offices and apartments will be centred on a refurbished Belconnen Fresh Food Markets to create a lively precinct where people can come to live, work, meet and play.

The precinct will include leading environmental sustainability technologies including electric vehicle plug in points, large scale solar microgeneration systems, geothermal heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, integrated rainwater and waste water management systems and precinct wide energy management systems.

Everything will be at your fingertips at the new precinct and with an energetic community atmosphere. Retail spaces will open onto communal spaces and parkland, cafes and restaurants will provide alfresco dining opportunities. Shared social and active spaces will include bbq areas, communal vegetable gardens, rooftop gardens and sporting facilities.

Healthy Bones week, August 2010 - Look for Broc the Broccoli or Alana the Banana in Canberra!

The Belconnen Markets are proud sponsors of the Healthy Bones week. We support healthy living and quality food, as well as all initiatives for kids to be active.

The Markets' mascots, Broc the Broccoli and Alana the Banana visited several schools, entertaining and dancing with kids, promoting healthy lifestyles and telling kids about events at the markets. Kids received stickers, activity books, teachers got posters and more...

It was lots of fun!

The Belconnen Markets were invited to Turner Primary School the Official Launch of the Healthy Bones week and donated over 1 500 pieces of fruit. Apples, oranges, bananas, cereal, milk, cheese, ... there was something for everyone. Thanks for a great day!

Broc the Broccoli visited Black Mountain school to do a gym session with kids with special needs and promote sports and activities. Students made wonderful smoothies and some even tasted fruit that they had never wanted to eat before and liked it!

The Healthy Munch early breakfast took place at Aranda Primary School: parents and  kids were invited to share a fresh fruit salad with lots of different flavours, some nice toast, milk, and more... Parents and kids learnt more about events at the markets and how to find out more on what's on at the markets (yes, our website www.bffm.com.au is the best way!).

A little information was given on our Market Tours, that’s when teacher visit the markets with their class and meet store holders who share secrets about their produce. To book your Market Tour, visit http://activekids.bffm.com.au

“Play for Life ...... Join a sporting club” Gala Sports Day- The Belconnen Markets support active kids!

The Belconnen Markets were sponsors of the Active After-school Communities Term 3 Campaign Launch “Play for Life ...... Join a sporting club” Gala Sports Day that took place at Evatt Primary School late July.

The Minister of Education was in attendance as well as Johanna Griggs, ambassador for the AASC Gala Launch across Australia.  And of course, our Mascot Alana the Banana was there to represent the Belconnen Markets.

The Belconnen Fresh Food Markets donated 60 pieces of fruit for the kids as well as 'veggie' stickers, posters and tatoos.  During the gala sports day students were engaged in physical activity sessions comprising Handball, Rhee Taekwondo, Tennis and Rugby Union. Alana even tried to play some handball!

Mother's Day Classic 9th of May, 2010

From fitness fanatics to families who enjoy a walk in the park, celebrities to unsung heroes, the Mother’s Day Classic has become an integral part of Mother’s Day for many Australians who are taking steps to help improve the lives of those affected by breast cancer.

Once again Belconnen Fresh Food Markets were proud sponsors of the Mothers Day Classic which took place on Sunday 9th May at Rond Terrace, Commonwealth Park. It was a great way for people to spend some quality time with their family by walking or running around the lake, while staying active and supporting a wonderful cause. About 90,000 Australians walked or ran to raise money for breast cancer research. Broc was there with a few of his friends on the day providing some fun and big hugs before and after the event.

Every year, thousands of Mother’s Day Classic participants choose to wear tribute cards dedicated to loved ones affected by breast cancer - a powerful reminder that breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australian women, with one in nine expected to be diagnosed by the age of 85.

Make sure you join in Australia’s largest charity event next year by choosing to walk, run, volunteer or stage a regional event. Visit www.mothersdayclassic.org for more information. Extra funds can also be raised by setting up a fundraising page and getting family, friends and colleagues to sponsor your walk or run.

Earth Hour

The markets celebrated Earth Hour on Saturday 27th March. It took place Saturday between 10am - 1pm on the Piazza with entertainment and giveaways. Keep an eye on the website for next year's event to get your special earth hour pack and enter the competitions to win some great prizes!

Thank you to all fellow citizens of our beautiful Nations Capital for joining us in the Piazza for a fun filled morning of performers and of course the funny and exciting Broc and Alana.  We had the pleasure of having the Earth Hour Embassador Carrie Graf join us on the day and tell us about Earth Hour, and how important it is for all of us to try and contribute to making a better and brighter future for our children.  Carrie had a chance to teach the kids some basketball skills, while also winning prizes of books that can teach them more about our environment - these books were kindly donated by Rock Development Group.   It was a wonderful day filled with great give-aways and prizes, there were a number of outstanding performances and young wannabe basketballers had the chance to meet and learn some basketball skills by one of Australia's best coaches, and a big thank-you to the performers and the Canberra community in helping us make it a successful Earth Hour 2010.

Charny Carny

Saturday 20th March was the annual Charny Carny! Broc and his friends were at the Christian Life Centre Oval, Lhotsky St Charnwood between 12pm - 6pm. It was a great community run event, with something for everyone to enjoy.

Broc Results: For the second year running Broc has come 3rd in the Carny Carny mascot race.  WELL DONE Broc!!
